Purpose. Performance. Resilience.

Performance mindset coaching to unlock your true potential

For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin - real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life

Pragmatic, results-driven coaching

I’m Matt: a multi-disciplined coach, ultra endurance athlete and former British Army Paratrooper. I help ambitious people define and achieve their professional, personal and athletic dreams.

I utilise proven behavioural and sports psychology techniques to deliver lasting change to people’s lives. Working in close partnership with you, I want to us to:

  • Craft meaningful goals, aligned to your values, that give your life direction

  • Find joy and fulfilment in your journey

  • Let go of self-sabotaging thoughts and behaviours

  • Arm you with tools and techniques that improve your mental resilience, helping you achieve more than you ever thought possible

Who I work with

A productive coaching relationship is based on trust, transparency, and a set of shared ambitions and values. With that in mind, here’s the kind of client I’m best able to serve:

You consider yourself extremely ambitious. You’re constantly the next big goal - it may be athletic or professional, but the common thread is that you’re not satisfied with where you currently find yourself.

Nothing you’ve achieved to date has given you the sense of fulfilment you crave. Maybe this has left you feeling lost and directionless; maybe it’s just led you to keep searching for bigger and scarier goals.

There’s a good chance people would call you obsessed with your athletic or professional journey. It feels all-consuming. Whenever life throws you a tough situation, your default is to throw yourself deeper into your passion.

If you’ve recently had to leave this passion behind, for example following a major career change or birth of a child, you’re probably struggling to work out your new purpose and identity. You feel lost, and are searching for meaning and direction.

If you’re still chasing big dreams, perhaps you struggle with performance anxiety. You’re plagued with self-doubt, convinced you have imposter syndrome, and your resolve wavers when faced with setbacks. At its worst, your fear of failure stops you from even trying.

Why me?

I first started coaching and mentoring during my army service. I ran a training establishment tasked with developing the future leaders of a 3000-strong infantry division, and led mentoring teams on operational tours in Oman and Afghanistan. Helping to develop the capability of foreign security forces was without doubt the most rewarding period of my working life, and the connections I made with my Afghan and Omani mentees are ones I’ll cherish forever.

During my army service I developed a fascination about the psychology of elite performance. What drives a Special Forces candidate to push their body and mind to the absolute limit of human endurance? How can a 24-year old infantry corporal maintain clarity of decision-making and purpose under intense enemy fire, whilst operating under huge levels of fatigue? What are the common traits of the very best soldiers, and how do these map across to elite performers in other fields?

I used myself as a guinea pig to test my developing theories, competing in a series of ultra endurance events to learn more about my own fortitude and drive under intense hardship. This led me to become a student of sports psychology and stoic philosophy, which form the basis of my framework for coaching resilience.

On leaving the military, I struggled enormously at first with a loss of purpose and identity. This, combined with deep-seated issues stemming from a difficult first tour of Afghanistan, led me to seek professional help. The experience was totally transformative, and I undertook professional training in behavioural psychology so that I could better understand the tools and techniques I’d been taught for building and maintaining a healthy mind. I now want to ‘pay forwards’ all of these learnings, so that others can reach their true potential.

My coaching style

We all have totally unique dreams, experiences, abilities and life context. As a result, I don’t do a single, ‘killer’ framework for success that I copy-and-paste to each new client, because I don’t believe that one exists. Instead, I pride myself on taking a bespoke approach to each coaching relationship based on your specific needs.

I’m also humble enough to know the limits of my own knowledge. Coaching for me is about role-modelling total transparency and integrity, so that you can build trust and belief in what we’re trying to achieve together. If we find ourselves in a challenging situation during a session, I won’t bluff or deflect us onto an area where I’m more comfortable. Together, we’ll find a solution that will truly help you.

I’m fascinated by what makes people tick, and nothing motivates me more than seeing others succeed. I enjoy working with ambitious and driven people, but I take a relaxed and informal approach to coaching. We may well tackle some difficult topics during the course of our coaching relationship, and I won’t ever shy away from these topics, but ultimately we’re here to achieve incredible things together: let’s have some fun while doing so!
